The Bucharest Metropolitan Area Intercommunity Development Association (ADIZMB) is an association formed and financed by the capital of Romania, Bucharest (NUTS 3 level), and the County of Ilfov (NUTS 3 level, a territorial unit with 8 towns and 32 communes. These two units also form the Bucharest Ilfov Region (NUTS2 level). The main values and interests of ADIZMB are open data, participatory processes, innovation, sustainable solutions, and priority of the public interest.
Bucharest is the most attractive and developed city in Romania, with the largest population of 2.139.439 residents, an area of 238 km2, and a population density of 87.711 inhabitants/km. It is also part of a more developed region ranked 25 among regions in the European Union, with a GDP per capita (PPS) of 49.200. Considering a NUTS 3 comparison, the city of Bucharest ranks higher among other European cities (152% of the EU median).
The city is the main cultural center of the country and the biggest attractor of jobs (1,1 million jobs), economic activities (the biggest concentration of companies in Romania), inhabitants (residents and migrants that generate trips reaching travel durations over one hour and distances of 100 km). This privileged place comes with some challenges like high traffic, housing crisis, environmental issues, the vulnerability of the built environment, lack of territorial reserves, social issues, and urban sprawl.
Similar to most European cities, Bucharest has a network of unused or partially used former industrial sites located in the central and in the proximity of the central area. These industrial sites represent a very important territorial resource for a city that lacks it and are, at the same time a resource for implementing sustainable solutions, providing social integration, promoting values of rational use of land, and prioritization of spatial development inside the city.Â
