Stara Zagora Municipality is located in the central part of Bulgaria and covers approximately 150 000 inhabitants. It is composed of Stara Zagora City (approx. 125 000 inhabitants) and 51 villages located nearby. It is a cultural, educational and economic hub in Central Bulgaria that is developing at a fast pace. It is one of the oldest inhabited places in Europe with more than 8000 years of historical heritage found on its territory. Over the last years, large investments were implemented in the area of sustainable urban development, air quality, green infrastructure and energy efficiency. All the urban parks were renewed and rehabilitated, the urban transport fleet is undergoing a complete renovation with zero emission vehicles, many old residential buildings were thermally isolated, as well as buildings from the educational infrastructure (schools and kindergartens). One of the main challenges that our Municipality is facing is the transition towards sustainable energy sources, as it is located in a coal-intensive region with a lot of jobs in the mining sector. The Municipality is interested in being a Transfer Partner in a consortium that will propose innovative urban solutions in the areas previously mentioned. We are also interested in joining a Leading Partner that proposes innovative solutions for the issues of the post-coal era of a coal-intensive region such as ours. Tourism and cultural heritage is another aspect of the local economy that we would like to enhance and support through such type of projects and networks.
