The city of Terrassa, which is part of the Barcelona Metropolitan Region, is the third city in population in Catalonia, with 224,211 inhabitants (2022) and a density of 3,187.4 inhabitants per km2.
The municipality is crossed from north to south by streams, highlighting the stream of "Riera de les Arenes" and "Riera del Palau", through which water runs noticeably after episodes of heavy rain.
The current EUI call for proposals focused on the theme of GREENER CITIES is the perfect opportunity to define a unique project for future guidelines, which consists of the development of urban and river renaturalization strategies that contribute to an increase in biodiversity and its conservation, with adaptation to climate change and an increase in the resilience of the system. The actions are aimed at promoting urban and fluvial renaturalization, as well as the mitigation of flood risks.
The main actions are the following:
Â
- Restoration of the riverbed taking into account solutions that guarantee flood risk reduction
- Renaturalization and increase of biodiversity, in terms of flora and fauna.
- Increase in the connection of the streams with the area of the Green Belt.
- Waterproofing the canalized sections of the Palau stream.
- Implantation of autochthonous plant species, with low water consumption and minimal maintenance.
- Improvement of air quality, with effects on the reduction of CO2
- Reduction of the urban heat island effect.
- Reduction of the barrier effect between neighborhoods, increasing the frequency of accessible areas, with proposals that make their public use more safe.
