This project aims to complete Kiel’s way to sustainability by a holistic approach on sustainable tourism for the capitol of Germany’s northernmost county Schleswig-Holstein and the rural areas around it. We address not only the reinforcement of local and regional touristic offers after Covid in order to make tourism economically sustainable and more resilient but also the overall ecological, social, economical and cultural sustainability of the entire Kiel region. As a harbour city, Kiel is well aware of the climate change’s impacts to be expected. Kiel already has declared its will to become zero waste city, climate city and ocean protection city, including plans how to achieve this. However, tourism is not yet part of these plans. The project KIELsustainableCITY closes this gap by combining actions in three sectors: digital, event, and quarter. All actions and sectors are interconnected. In “digital”, tourist destinations are made digitally tangible and experienceable, including the CitiHub, a digital ocean world that takes its visitors on a journey to understand the ocean’s needs and threats. In “event”, we will carry out three public events (one per year) that bring tourists, inhabitants and other stakeholders together with the focus on nature experience, understanding and conservation. Preferably, we are looking into a sailing event that combines sustainability and marine conservation and thus leads to the greatest possible acceptance among the population and guests of Kiel.Sailing.City. The Event also brings the CitiHub in an analog format. In “quarter”, we will foster social sustainability, while our test area is so called “maritime quarter” in the north of Kiel.Â
We are looking for urban partners (associated and transfer partner).
