Discovering Caorle
The area is characterized by different landscapes: river landscapes of the Livenza, Lemene, and Tagliamento; the rural, historic, wine-growing, restoration landscape; and the lagoon-valley landscape. Major infrastructures (A4 motorway, Venice-Trieste railway, Trieste state road) have contributed to the recent urban development, dividing the eastern Veneto plain into two zones. These infrastructures act as corridors of communication between the hinterland and the tourist coast. The strategic centre of the municipality is the historical centre of Caorle, which links the eastern and western coasts with Porto Santa Margherita, Altanea and Duna Verde. Each of the towns within the municipality of Caorle has a different urban structure and type of building, as well as a wide range of entertainment and leisure activities.
Caorle is a town with a wealth of features, including the picturesque lagoon with its characteristic "casoni" (fishermen's huts), the wide beaches along the coast and the reclaimed land, famous also thanks to writers such as Hemingway. The territory of Caorle includes 40% of protected natural areas, which are an attraction for tourism linked to nature, wellness and the study of sustainable agricultural practices, especially in the Valle Vecchia area.
The territory of Eastern Venice presents a peculiarity of great interest and value, namely the navigability of the rivers, lagoons and canals, as well as the presence of cycle tourism rings placed along the river axes.
Challenges
The access to the centre of Caorle is strongly conditioned by the geography of its territory. The historical centre and the main built-up area are situated on an island that can only be accessed from a single point, thanks to two bridges with different traffic capacities. This feature becomes a major disadvantage during periods of high tourist activity, such as summer and major events. In fact, during these periods, access to the city centre often becomes problematic due to the congestion that occurs on the access bridges and the surrounding roads, causing inconvenience to residents and visitors. In addition, the distribution of traffic within the built-up area and near the historic centre is complicated by the fact that the roads were not designed to cope with such heavy traffic.
At present, the car is the standard means of transport used by tourists to get to the city and to move around the area. A paradigm shift is essential to reduce the pressure on the territory.
As mentioned above, the municipality has a large number of protected natural areas within its territory. In this context, it is essential to adopt measures to limit the impact of human activity, especially during the summer months, in order to preserve the valuable environmental characteristics of these areas, which are in themselves an important element of tourist attractiveness.
Seeking solutions
Caorle wants to confirm its supremacy as a tourist town of high environmental character, implementing all the good practices of which its municipality is capable, not only to contribute to the achievement of the sustainability goals of the 2030 Agenda (SDGS- Sustainable Development Goals), but also to become a reference for the entire Adriatic coastal system.
Mobility is a priority for the Municipality of Caorle. In order to understand and monitor tourist flows, with the intention of linking tourist mobility to commuter and residential mobility, it is essential to take into account the hinterland and therefore the surrounding municipalities. The theme of sustainable mobility is the main axis for approaching the objective of "green transition of the urban area", as a model of territory that aims at a high environmental quality, according to the criteria of beauty, air quality, water purification, with a focus also on an efficient and responsible use of resources (urban regeneration, circularity in waste management, ...).
From this perspective, the municipality is interested in the application of innovative solutions that allow the consolidation of a sustainable tourism ecosystem.
In particular, we are looking for solutions to
 - Encourage multi-modal tourist transport for the enjoyment of the resort and  the surrounding hinterland;
 - Encourage tourists to use means of transport other than the car to reach the resort;
- Achieve the goal of "Caorle car-free city", upgrading the centre of Caorle in   a vision of tourist hospitality but also quality of urban life;
- Innovative solutions to be applied in protected areas, with reference to the  anthropogenic pressures that have emerged in recent years.
